Dearest readers,
I havent forgotten you all- I have just been somewhat busy. Allow me to explain.
Last week, (which was probably more like the week before now..) Rob visited this side of the pond. As a result I have been busy. Might I also add this was the week of class, work at the UN, Audra's (an attorney I work with) last week and my sleep deprivation.
Rob arrived on Wednesday relatively on time (give or take) and proceeded to require food and alcohol. I figured this was his first night so he should probably get drunk to prolong the jet lag as long as possible. :)However, what actaully happened was, we met Dunken (AKA Drunkin Dunken) in Doriens and proceeded to drink with him. Read his name. Think of the consequences....
Anywho, Thursday came and I woke up a tad late, (not HUGELY late) but there was limited time for anything except get up, leave. Rob seemed to have woken up early and simply waited. grr.... Does nobody understand howe mornings work with me??? (someone of you have had the lucky experience of ensuring I am awake at a certain time- others you have no idea!)
It seems having sent him on his merry way down Wall Street Rob managed (as everyone does the first time they attempt to understand the (il)logic of the subway systems in NYC) to get lost. Clearly he found himself again else I would never have found out this info, which he told me when I met him for dinner after work. Of course he had to witness the wonders of the 14th Street Diner. There is never a bad time for this place! The waiters commented on the situ in europe re: football (pleased with themselves they knew not to call it soccer). I explained the general dislike of the french. They seemed taken aback. Americans!
Friday was Robs Birthday! I shall not state the age which he turned as he seems to get a bit tetchy.. but he is thr *cough ee cough* zero. oops!
Anyway before the celebrations I had to work in the morning. Then run off to the UN over lunch for my walking tour in the afternoon explaining my role the following week and making sure I knew where all these buldings / conference rooms were that I was meant to direct people toward. Did I mention a *FREE* walking tour of the UN??? Ah.. to be in the know..
I had drinks afterward with my new comrades (including memebers of the spanish and dutch consulates, a polish intern and a few MB's) in the UN bar overlooking long island. Then remembered I had left Rob somewhere! lol.
When I finally got back to my phone he seemed to have got lost soemwhere on a ferry and therefore I wasnt too late collecting him - given he didnt know where he was!
He turned up in Newport some time after where we started on the beers and pizza in true birthday styleee...and after a lengthy pause headed off to the 'park' for more drinking and MB gathering. Hima & Hiten also had birthdays this day so everyone turned out for a general drunken night!
Basil, Mayur, Dunken, Hima, Steph, Hitnen, Rich D, Suba, Nicole, Gregor,.. well you get the idea- many people were there. However it was rather pricey so we didnt stay too long and ended up wadering back to the train and then home - which was at a mere 2.30am ish.
Saturday! Then plan had been to shop for touristy stuff today. However it rained. Conveniently at the time in question Rob and I were seconds from the Irish bar in times square so had a place to shelter :)
The rain continued, so we (much to our regret) were FORCED (yes really) to remain in the pub for several hours. After the terrible weather subsided it was dinner (the southern one) time. We headed for food rounf the corner and then ended up returing home having bought only an umbrella. You win some you loose some!
Sunday we tried again to shop and managed a little more successfully. At one point we walked across central park and found the MET museum for an hour or so. This was a more reaxed day I believe drinks in the apt followed and general not going out.
Yet somehow I managed to stay up faaaaaar too late which shall be discussed below.
Monday. Was the beginning of the UN work. I had to be outside the office at 7.30am! This was not good. IN order to get to said location you have to take a PATH train and then a 20min walk uptown at high speed in ridiculous humidity. Also I had had close to 4 hours sleep. This point did not help the above proceedings. Rob was left at the PATH station to his own avail.
The first day I was mainly microphone lady, imagine Trisha show. I was that person running about the audience! Genrally I networked and enjoyed my *free* coffees etc. (What? i'm an intern these things are important!)
After this I met Rob for drinks and Korean food where he was duped into eating sushi and drinking saki. (He didnt put up much of a fight to be honest) Afte this I think we headed back to the apt.
Tuesday was again an early morning. More UN work, I prepared conference rooms and scheduled time slots for businesses meeting with UN folk e.g UNICEF etc..
I managed to get out early and having swapped facebook noted with all newbies met at this event jumped in a cab to meet Rob at the natural history museum. There was a swift nose around the armery and bio / space exhibits and then a run back to the apt to pick up Rob's stuff and then off to the airport. After a final beer I tossed him on to a plane (no not literally) and went back to sleep.
Wednesday I had class after work. (no rest. wicked...) more careers twaddle from the toad man. He did however (after all his talk of knowing nothing about CV's) tell me mine was the best so far ( as close to a compliment as I think I will get here) - so again I ask- why am I attending this class??
By Thursday I hadnt had a night off for a week and was looking forward to a break. Of course it was Audras last day today before she moved to vegas and she needed going away drinks. (its a hard life...) Maryam, Susan, Naureen, Audra and myself hit the Merc down on wall street and then on to Ulycessis. The night was interesting. Two blokes came up to me claiming to be from London as if this was impressive? I'm not sure... I informed them they clearly wern't from London, not with those stupid Essex accents..
The night went on, a women from the New York Federal Bank told me she would like to hire me, and I met a girl from california who wanted to show me round next time I was over there... (er sooner than she knows..)
Audra has also promised tours of vegas when I get over there in a few weeks so all is looking surprisingly rosey :)
I got in around 4.30am with the distinct feeling I wasnt going to work the next day.
Friday I didnt go to work. I was tired! Instead I called Adam to catch up on the weeks news and then went back to sleep.
Oh yes there's still more..
Saturday I went with Maryam to Haarlem for a volunteer project we had signed up for doing arts and crafts with children in an elementary school. However when we got there it seems it had been double booked! So instead we bought chicken and strawberries and sat in a park tanning.
Sunday I thought it was about time I went back to the gym. I cleaned, did laundry etc. Nothign much to report.
Monday I had another class which brings me up to today!
Tonight is ANOTHER class with toad man, and hopefully this will be the last!
phew. ok. Did I miss anything? (Rob feel free to add bits)
