Wow I dont remember the last time I was on here- let me try and highlight some key events for you...
ok so it was Fleet Week- which means the ships come to dock and the sailors decend on NYC. Theres loads of events, you can look round the ships, theres seaport shows, oh and the sailors prance about in their uniforms everywhere to trying to pick up women.- The NY'ers seem to love it- to me it looks tacky. Its the kind of thing you'd expect in 1940's britain when the blokes come back from war.. (except these blokes havent really done anything)
Anywho, I went to meet the flat folk for dinner during fleet week, starting first at a bar nr. union square (which was of course packed with sailors) Andy, James & I managed to find said bar and turn up on time- but the rest didnt. Suba (of course) was late and hadnt bothered to look up directons, Vicky was being 'fashionably late' and Dan had decided he just wouldn't attend the pre-drinks (but hadnt told anyone).
Once we had located the stragglers we headed to Brooklyn for Thai food. The restaurant was cool- there were bubble chairs hanging from the ceiling and a pond in the middle with pebbles. The food was good- I had stir fried green vegetables and cous cous. But the newbies havent adjusted to being poor wihtout looking poor and made a huge fuss about paying and splitting the bill. Needless to say Vicky was quite annoyed by all the diciding and change swapping we had to do to keep them happy. Afterward, those who wernt 'poor' went to another bar acorss the road - where sand covered the floor and palm trees hung from the walls - no your right nobody knows why, but I liked it. I didnt drink as I was actually poor, but the others did and had molitos with mint and lime. It all looked very foreign which was wierd because its brooklyn!
Sometime after this, maybe 2 days?? I went to see 'What happens in Vegas' with Suba. Good-ish film, funny. Cameron Diaz starred, and there was a scene where she walked down Wall Street at the beginning. This was weird as I could have sworn in the first week I was here I saw her walking down Wall Street on my lunch break filming. But I was so new and confused by it all that I dismissed it. It seems now that it has turned up in this film! (I could have been famous damn it!!)
Many more days have been filled with work and general stuff like gym going and educating the newbies in the realms of cleaning and cooking- it seems somewhere in the world students survive a whole degree without ever learning thses skills- I dont know where this place is- but I feel ashamed on behalf of these twenty-somethings who are incapable of basic living and have been in la-la-land for the past 3 years of their lives (no names mentioned.. *cough cough*).
Then came the heat. Over the last 7 days summer happened. It went from tolerable sunny days to humidity that is just horrible. Followed by a freak thunderstorm on saturday and then back to the humid icky-ness again.
This would be bad enough accept that Suba already had an inflated sense of heat and insists we all constantly keep windows/doors etc open for her sake including during the night- when temperatures plummet and thus I spend my days outside melting and my night inside freezing to death. Yes I know, so much for give-take. The result is I cannot sleep. The noise from a busy neighbourhood at night is precisly the noise of a busy neighbourhood during the day and this includes taxi horns, car alarms, police cars, people shouting and screaming... you get the idea. Its difficult to sleep - her answer? I should get ear plugs! Then I shall only be freezing! Well Yay! Meanwhile, she will continue on her happy way wihtout disturbance! I think its a matter of time before I kill her.
In other news: I spent the night in on friday with vicky watching Hairspray while she was ill. It was oddly fun girls night and with no disturbances from Suba who had disappeared again without notice - thus a relatively warm evening also! Horah!
During the week a court reporter working for my firm came up to me and asked me if I thought Renee Zellweger was a convincing British person in Bridget Jones? I know- its random and I wasnt really sure- given I dont mix in the circles of tea parties in London. I said there were probably people somewhere who sounded like her and therefore it could well be. So she went on to ask where I was from. When I told her, she re-phrased the question- was she convincing in Ms. Potter? Now that I definately didnt know. Apparently the film 'Ms. Potter' is set in the Lake District (I was thinking it might have been - cant think why??!!!) and given the americans think england is only 2cm wide I must live right next to it! I point out again that Renee does the same 'british' accent for every film so no it doesnt apply in places other than London. That night I watched the film 'ON DEMAND' to see if it was realistic. and the answer is no- its exactly the same as Bridget Jones and I'm quite sure a 18th century londoner turned cumbrian would not sound the same as middle class southerner today. (But then there's no point trying to explain what a cumbrain is- it would all be a bit too involved!) Just smile and nod :) So i told her it was and she went away happy.. no comment.
Last Saturday I went for Turkish food with Jen, Justine and Banico on 2nd Ave. It was good. I've never had Turkish before but I have been converted. I have Cabbage stuffed with beef in tomato and something else sauce with crusty bread and olive oil :) It was cheap too! V. good. After this we headed across thr road to a place Jen apparently frequents on a lunchtime for frozen Margaritas. (no comment about Jen's lunchtime drinking). I dont argue- $4 drinks are not to be snuffed at! I had Kiwi flavour loving the ridiculous hawaian theme and coldplay music that was going on at the same time.
After this I had to leave them to get drunker as I headed for Chelsea to meet Maryam. Her and Bernie had managed (through some kind of miracle) to get tickets to the new Sex & City movie on a Saturday 2 days after its release! The place was full of screaming girls which was hilarious! The film was good- I wont tell you what happens but I enjoyed it- we got out around 1.30am. Good night!
Sunday of course I was woken up again by my lovely inconsiderate room mate shouting down the phone 5 ft from my bed and thus I spent half the day trying to regain my lost hours of sleep!
Somekind of truse wil happen soon with the sleep or I will just die, but many more plans are on there way + pics of course.
Bye !
